The tunnel exhaled Lilly back into the world above just as the moon dipped low behind the treetops, and the forest lay hushed, as though it, too, held its breath for what the morning might bring. She did not linger to marvel at the stars, though a small part of her wished to. There was no time for wonder now, only to get back to her area of rest and see what tomorrow brings.

The frog paused at the tunnel's mouth, its throat pulsing once, twice, in the cool night air.

"I shall return," Lilly whispered,

The darkness did not last, though Lilly's eyes took a long moment to understand what was happening. As she pressed forward, one careful step after another, a soft blue light began to bloom along the tunnel walls. She reached out a trembling hand and touched a cluster of crystals, no bigger than acorns, embedded in the rock like scattered jewels. They pulsed gently, as though breathing, and their glow deepened wherever her fingers passed near. It was mesmerizing, she thought.

By dawn, the King's decision had been made, though it sat heavy as iron upon his heart. The bells of Eldoria rang out across the snow-dusted kingdom. These bells were not the joyful rings that called folk to festival, but a deep realization that everyone's duties would shift. The last time these bells rang was when the King’s father was in charge.
